Building Computers: Your First Try

Building Computers: Your First Try

If this is your first try at building a computer, there's some things you should know that will make the build less hard, and the computer run better one time you’ve done.

First, don’t worry about tools. The only items you absolutely have to get are a couple of screwdrivers, a flat tip, and a Phillips. The odds are you’ve already got those lying around the house somewhere. A set of retractors, the two fingered kind that look like a syringe, are nice to pick up screws with when they fall in to corners, but you don’t have to have them.

Second, everybody designs their computers around the CPU. If you’re editing video, or doing other demanding chores, you may require a dual core system. A basic web and home work PC can be built around a bargain CPU.

One time you pick your processor, logically you can move on to the motherboard, because you’ve settled on a slot type. Keep in mind the savings to be had by purchasing a motherboard/CPU combo.

Prioritize your needs. Are you a gamer? Do you require a twin graphics card system? Then set that as your top priority, and let the decisions you make follow. Receive a motherboard that can handle two cards, or whatever special needs you have.

, get all the RAM you can afford. Nothing improves computer speed like extra RAM. There’s less waiting for programs to load, and applications that use huge files run more efficiently, without relying on virtual memory.

An all often overlooked item is the power supply. People usually go with the 300 or 350 watt supply that comes with a case. But, depending on the system they build, they could be risking a catastrophic system failure. Look at it this way, a top finish CPU requires 100 watts all by itself. A 256MB graphics card is another 100 watts. A Crossfire system doubles that.

Finally, I advise that you read and save every piece of paper documentation that comes with the parts you buy. This stuff always winds up in the trash, yet it carries valuable information, often about tricky tasks like connecting the case wires.

Yes, you can design a power miser, but you have to carefully consider every part. A basic PC can be built that only requires about 200 to 230 watts. It means using a slower CPU, and a modest graphics card.

Upgrading RAM on Your Home Computer

Upgrading RAM on Your Home Computer

RAM is essential for several different applications, but more so for some than others. For example encoding video would take up a large amount of RAM as it is RAM intensive. Database applications also use up a lot of RAM due to the amount of data involved. Surfing the web and using word or powerpoint for example would not use much RAM at all. The query you need to ask is do you need the upgraded RAM. If you don’t then save your money. If you do read on.

RAM is an acronym for Random Access Memory. RAM is an important part of any computer method. RAM is memory to hold frequently used bits of data for the computer to access in an efficient manner. Accessing RAM as opposed to the hard disk is a lot not as hard and quicker for a computer.

One time you pick the size of the RAM you need you have to pick the type of RAM. There's two main types of RAM. DDR and DDR2. What you have to take in to account when buying the RAM is which type your motherboard will support. Most new Intel motherboards will take DDR2 as this is the latest technology. At present AMD boards are not compatible with DDR2 so if you have an AMD board then you will have to buy DDR RAM.

There's several options to pick from when upgrading RAM. The first is the size of RAM you need to purchase. They come in 256mb, 512mb, 1gig and 2gig varieties. as a fast reference 1gig of RAM will be for most things you need to do, 2gig might be overkill.

There you have it, improving the speed of your computer by upgrading the RAM is simple and can be effective.

One time you buy the RAM then you have to install it. Installing RAM is simple. Firstly you need to remove the case in order to be able to get to the motherboard. One time this is done you simple need to put the RAM in to one of the free slots on your motherboard. Something to take note of would be the particular slot you put the RAM in. Some motherboards can be fussy so read the user manual of your motherboard before upgrading the RAM.

CPU Guide - Detailed Information About the CPU of a Computer

CPU Guide - Detailed Information About the CPU of a Computer

CPU - Central Processing Unit
The brain of the computer. A lot of people like to call the entire computer case the CPU, but actually, the CPU is a tiny chip connected directly to the motherboard, with a big fan connected directly to it. Without the fan, the CPU would burn up very quickly.
There are two primary brands of CPU on the market right now, Intel & AMD. A better of the two is hard to state, but you can check Toms Hardware for more in depth hardware reviews.
One thing to note about CPU's is that you can't just slap any CPU into any Motherboard. The Motherboard must support your specific CPU, which can make upgrades very hairy, so typically, if you're going to upgrade one, it's a good idea to upgrade the other. See more on Motherboards on the Motherboard page.
There are also two different types of CPU's, socket and slot. Socket snaps directly into the motherboard, with a fan directly attached, while slot has a casing which holds the CPU, with a fan connected to the casing. Again, there really is no better of the two, but Socket is becoming more common, and is generally easier to keep cool, which is a BIG factor in CPU's at higher speeds.
CPU speeds are rated in Megahertz (Mhz), up to 1000, then they are referred to as Gigahertz (Ghz). One major misconception regarding CPU's is that the bigger the number (the megahertz/gigahertz), the faster the CPU. While this is generally true, there are several other factors that effect the overall speed of the CPU.
Front Side Bus - Regulates the speed of communication between the Ram and the CPU
Onboard Cache - Comparable to Ram, except used strictly by the CPU to speed up calculations
So the next time you're shopping for CPU's, remember to not only look at the CPU speed, but check out the other factors most people don't generally notice.
When buying a CPU, it's very important to know what you need it for. Most basic users only need internet and some word processing and basic picture editing. Using Windows XP (since it's the most common home Operating System right now) 2.0 Ghz should be your minimum. This speed is just right for these basic functions, and should be fast enough to last a while, and most of all, it is very cheap.
One thing to note here is that the price difference between the 2.0 Ghz and the upper 2.x Ghz CPU's (like 2.6 or 2.9) is so slight that you might be better off to get the one slightly higher to last longer over time.
I do NOT suggest buying the fastest cpu on the market, ever.. simply because what you pay six hundred dollars or more for now, will be only a few hundred dollars in a couple of months, and this will always be true as long as cpu speeds keep increasing.

Choosing a Computer Case

Choosing a Computer Case

ATXPowerSupplies.Com writes this article on "choosing the right computer case for your computer" to help you in your decision making process. There are literally thousands of computer cases on the market which sometimes makes choosing the right computer case quite a task.
First and foremost select a computer case that appeals to your personal tastes. Once you have found one that looks good to you then there are a few other attributes about computer cases that you should be aware of.
Does it have front USB? It almost doesn't make sense to have a computer case without front usb. Front USB ports come in handy for hooking up digital cameras and downloading images. This enables you to avoid pulling the computer out to search for the usb ports in the back. Almost all motherboards have ports for front usb as well as rear usb. Other uses of front usb ports are: memory stick insertion, mp3 player docking, portable printer docking, and temporary networking between computers.
How does the motherboard install into the case? If possible try to find a case that has a removable backplane for mounting the motherboard. The backplane is able to be removed from the case to mount the motherboard. Using this method it is possible to install the motherboard out in the open where there is plenty of room to work. Installing a motherboard in a computer case without a removable backplane can be cramped. You also run the risk of cutting your hands on the surrounding case chassis. Of course, if the computer case is large then it may not be necessary for it to have a removable backplane. The removable backplane feature becomes more important if the computer case is small sized.
What form factor is your motherboard? There are several form factors that motherboards are usually manufactured. The major form factors are: Micro ATX, Full ATX (commonly referred to as ATX), and Extended ATX. Every computer case should denote which motherboard form factors it accepts. If the case doesn't describe which motherboard form factors it accepts then it's best to move on; you run the risk of buying a computer case that doesn't fit your motherboard. Physical measurements of a motherboard are mostly unimportant. As long as the form factors of the case and motherboard match then you should have no problem with installation.
What size power supply does the computer case have? Ask yourself this important question because most companies that sell computer cases will include a small power supply that is, most of the time, too small for your application. Having an undersized power supply can lead to erratic computer operation, most often denoted by frequent rebooting. Most computer cases at ATXPowerSupplies come standard without a power supply. People have different needs so we provide the opportunity for the customer to add whichever size power supply they need in their case.

How many device bays will your computer need? It is necessary to know how many 5.25" and 3.5" bays you'll need in your computer case. If you're installing four cdroms in your computer then it will be necessary to have a case with at least four 5.25" bays. You'll also need a certain number of 3.5" bays. Floppy drives and hard drives fit into 3.5" bays. For floppy drives the bays should be external, meaning that they are accessible from the outside of the computer case. Hard drives are mounted in the internal 3.5" bays. The bottom line is to be sure you have enough bays for all of your devices.
Will the physical dimensions of the computer case fit into your location? Be sure to pick a computer case that fits inside whatever space you have designated for your computer. Pay close attention to the overall height, width, and depth.
Does your space provide for ample cooling of your computer? In most applications where the computer is set in open space the fans in the power supply and on the cpu are enough to cool the computer. In places such as cabinets you might want to add one or two fans to aid in the cooling process. Another application that might call for additional cooling fans is when overclocking of the processor is performed.

Computer Viruses - How to Remove a Computer Virus from Your Computer

Computer Viruses - How to Remove a Computer Virus from Your Computer

Computer viruses infect millions of computers every day. Viruses can destroy data, steal important information, and even make a computer completely unusable. When a computer is infected by a virus it is imperative that the virus be removed as quickly as possible.

If a computer is infected by a computer virus the computer needs to be scanned by virus scanning software. If you do not own virus scanning software than you may buy some software at www.norton.com.
If you do not wish to buy the virus scanning software at this point, than you may use a free virus scan which is located at www.mcafee.com.

In order to use the freescan;

1. Go to www.mcafee.com,

2. Click on home & home office

3. Under the heading of free tools
(at the bottom of the page), click scan now

4. Click scan now (accepting user agreement)

5. The program will download an activex control (make sure that they are allowed), click install when prompted to do so

6. Make sure C: Drive is highlighted and click scan

7. If any files are found by Mcafee to have viruses, go to that location on your hard-drive, and delete those files.

If you cannot access the Internet as a result of the virus or the computer is unusable, than other measures may have to be taken. If the computer is unusable, and you have another hard-drive on hand, than you may hook up the damaged hard-drive as a slave drive.

(Consult the user manual of your computer to see where your hard-drive is hooked up, and how your motherboard is setup). You will have to unhook your hard-drive, put a different hard-drive in as the primary drive, and hookup the damaged drive as the slave drive (make sure the computer is shut down and unplugged when removing computer parts, also make sure you are grounded (static electricity destroys computer parts)). Once this is done than you may boot your computer, and copy the necessary files over to the other hard drive. You may also run scans on your slave drive at this point, in order to remove the virus from the damaged hard drive.

Another way to remove a virus from your computer is to use the removal tools on www.symantec.com.

1. If another computer is available
(if the virus infected computer is unusable), than go to www.symantec.com

2. Click on the Security Response Tab

3. You can look for the virus that is infected on your computer. Once you find out what virus is infected on your computer (look for the behavior that the virus is exhibiting on your computer), you can click on the Downloads Tab

4. Click on Virus Removal Tools

5. Click on the virus that is infected on your computer

6. Follow the instructions on the virus removal page in order to remove the virus from the infected computer.
